The department „Building physics“ comprises the fields of room acoustics, building acoustics and thermal building physics.
Room acoustics
Room acoustics deal with the distribution of sound, sound steering and sound absorption within rooms.
The aim is the optimization of rooms depending on the type of usage. For example, speech intelligibility in class rooms, sonority in concert halls or noise level reduction in working rooms. Apart from pre-planning, room acoustical measurements are often conducted during the construction phase to coordinate and optimize measures.
Building acoustics
In building acoustics, the sound transmission from room to room is analyzed with the aim of reducing transmission of airborne structure-borne noise already at the planning stage as much as possible.
Especially challenging are buildings in which quiet office and residential rooms co-exist with particlary noisy establishments like fitness clubs or pubs.
Additionally, after commissioning and as part of the quality inspection of the building according to DIN 4109, we measure the airborne sound insulation of components for stocktaking, quality control or in case of complaints.
Thermal building physics
Thermal building physics mostly deals with temperature and moisture protection of buildings.
Apart from dimensioning the measures for energy-saving thermal protection for new buildings, which have to take into account external components as well as heating installations to an increasing degree, thermal restoration of old buildings is becoming more and more important.
